General Information
What is Moresby Explorers?
We are a locally operated tour company offering guided adventures in Gwaii Haanas National Park Reserve, National Marine Conservation Area Reserve, and Haida Heritage Site on Haida Gwaii.
What types of tours do you offer?
We specialize in zodiac boat tours that explore the stunning landscapes, cultural sites, and wildlife of Gwaii Haanas. Our tours range from day trips to multi-day excursions.
How do I get to Haida Gwaii?
Haida Gwaii is accessible via ferry from Prince Rupert or by flight to Sandspit or Masset. Check with BC Ferries or airlines like Air Canada or Pacific Coastal for travel options.
What makes Gwaii Haanas unique?
Gwaii Haanas is co-managed by the Haida Nation and the Canadian government, offering a blend of pristine wilderness, Haida cultural heritage, and biodiversity.
Where can I park my vehicle?
If you’re joining us from Graham Island, you can park your vehicle on the side of the road next to the Skidegate ferry terminal for free. You can then board the ferry as a foot passenger, and we will pick you up for the tour as you disembark. (Don’t forget to purchase your ticket at the toll booth!)
Other parking options on Moresby Island could be the K’il Kun Xidgwangs Daanaay Sandspit Airport overnight parking lot for $2/night, Alliford Bay ferry terminal has a free gravel parking lot area, and Moresby Camp has a large free parking lot if you’re comfortable driving your vehicle on forest service roads.
Are kids allowed on the tour?
Yes! We can bring children as young as four on our day tours and five on our overnight tours. While they may not be as interested in the historical and cultural components of the tour, they are excited about the intertidal life, wildlife, our floating lodge, and bouncy boat ride. Some things to consider when deciding if it’d be suitable for your children is that the boat rides are often cold, bouncy and quite wet. We have various sizes of rain gear and gumboots, but if your child already has them, it’s a good idea to bring them from home for extra comfort. While we try to keep the portions on the boat to less than 2 hours, there are some longer stretches on the four-day tour where we cannot stop (due to lack of suitable landing beaches, etc).
Also, we spend a lot of time at the ancient Haida Village sites. These spots are usually a highlight for our guests and are often a time for quiet reflection and great cultural learning. A tour is generally provided by the guide or by one of the Haida Watchmen first, and then guests have some free time to take pictures, etc. We ask that parents ensure their kids respect the sites and the other guests throughout the tour by way of things like staying on the trails, listening to the guide, etc.
Booking and Preparation
How do I book a tour?
You can book directly through our website or contact us via phone or email. Advanced booking is recommended, especially for multi-day trips.
What is included in the tour price?
Tour prices typically include transportation, guiding services, meals (on multi-day trips), safety equipment, Parks Canada fees, tax and accommodations where applicable.
What should I pack?
Pack layers, waterproof clothing, sturdy footwear, sunscreen, a hat, and a reusable water bottle. A detailed packing list is provided here.
Are there age or fitness requirements?
Our tours are suitable for most ages and fitness levels, but participants should be comfortable in a small boat and able to walk short distances. Contact us with specific concerns. As a general guideline we take children as young as four on day trips and five on overnights.
How and when do I pay for my tour?
When you book a tour, we ask for a 25% deposit to secure your spot. We take these payments using our secure online payment system, which accepts all major credit cards and select debit cards. We will process the remaining balance one month before your tour. If you would like to pay differently, please let our office know; we would happily accommodate. Please read our cancellation policy before booking here.
How many people are on the tours?
We take a maximum of 11 people, but most tours are between 8 and 10.
What if our tour is cancelled due to bad weather? How often does this happen?
If we must cancel a tour due to weather or other uncontrollable circumstances, we will attempt to reschedule to another day that works for you. If another date doesn’t work, we’ll refund 100% of the cost. Every summer, we cancel about 3-5 day trips for weather but typically do not cancel overnight tours; we adjust the itinerary to visit more sheltered areas during rough weather and explore exposed areas when conditions improve. Please note, if you choose not to attend a booked tour (for example, if it’s raining heavily), we do not issue refunds. We cancel for severe weather like high winds and waves, but not for rain; without this policy, we couldn’t operate in Gwaii Haanas!
Do you charge a single supplement for solo travellers?
No. All our prices are per person, meaning the cost is the same for single travellers.
On the Tour
How fit do I need to be to go on your tours?
You don’t need to be an athlete to join our tours, but these wilderness adventures on small open boats require some considerations. Think about handling a bouncing boat, walking on unmaintained trails, getting in and out of zodiac boats, and coping with chilly, unpredictable weather. Detailed information is available on our Health & Fitness page. Please read it thoroughly, and contact us if you have concerns about your fitness level.
Will I get seasick?
People prone to seasickness generally don’t have issues on our boats, as the motion is bouncier than the slow rocking that typically causes sickness. However, please inform your guide if you are vulnerable so they can help avoid triggering situations. Feel free to bring anti-nausea medication, but we suggest waiting to see if you need it to avoid drowsiness during your trip trip!
Can I attend the tour if I’m pregnant?
We can take you on the boat during the first or second trimester, but after that, the risk of bouncing is too high. Please consult your doctor before booking. Be aware that there may be unavoidable bouncing and jarring motions, and you would be far from medical help if anything goes wrong. We may ask for a docters note.
What will I see on the tours?
Expect breathtaking scenery, Haida Watchmen sites, old-growth rainforests, abundant wildlife (eagles, whales, sea lions, and bears), and unique geological formations.
What are the Haida Watchmen sites?
These are culturally significant Haida village sites.
Will I see wildlife?
While sightings aren’t guaranteed, our tours often encounter whales, seals, sea lions, bald eagles, and other incredible marine and terrestrial wildlife.
How should I dress? Do I really need that many layers, and things like ski goggles and a toque?
We think you’ll be happier on your tour if you wear warm clothes and ski accessories. The damp air in Haida Gwaii and frequent rain make it feel colder than expected from the forecast. On warmer days, guests often question our recommended attire. Remember, you can always remove layers, and we have storage on the boat for any unwanted clothing. You might need fewer layers on a sunny day, but for multi-day tours, bring all your layers, even if you don’t wear them the first day. We provide heavy rubber raincoats and rainpants, but if you have your own lighter rain gear, bring it too. When we reach shore, you can wear your gear under ours and switch to your lighter, more comfortable clothing.
What should I bring? How much space will I have for luggage?
Your packing list varies by tour. It is included in the booking confirmation and on your tour profile page. Since our boat has limited dry space, all gear must fit in a small soft pack or duffel (under 35L). Bags should also be compressible—no hard-shell suitcases—to fit our storage space.
What kind of footwear should I bring?
We will provide tall rubber boots for the tour to keep you dry when getting on and off the boat. We suggest bringing sturdy walking shoes in case the provided boots don’t fit or are uncomfortable. Many find it easiest to wear the boots all day to avoid constant changes but having shoes for short hikes is helpful. On overnight trips, consider slippers or sandals for the evening, though most can manage with just one pair of shoes. Remember, your walking shoes may get wet and muddy, so they should have good traction for slippery surfaces.
Should I be worried about bears?
There are black bears on Haida Gwaii, but they are generally shy and wary of humans. There has never been a report of a bear attack on Haida Gwaii. As with any wildlife, there is always some level of risk, but the islands are relatively much safer than other parts of BC in terms of dangerous wildlife.
Should I tip my guide?
We encourage you to bring some cash to tip your guide, though it’s not required. Tipping is increasingly common on guided tours, especially if the guide enhances your experience. If you tip your guide, they will share it with the office staff and cooks, but you can also tip other staff directly. For credit card tips, call our office after the tour, and we’ll charge your card to pass on the tip.
Safety and Logistics
If I have a medical emergency, how is help available?
Options for medical emergencies include marine or air services by the Canadian Coast Guard, Air Ambulance helicopters, private helicopters, Parks Canada vessels, and our boats. Reaching a hospital can take several hours or more. Evacuation typically occurs by boat or helicopter, depending on the emergency’s severity. If local hospitals in Haida Gwaii cannot handle your case, you may need transfer to Vancouver or another larger facility. Travel to Gwaii Haanas carries risks not faced at home.
Are your tours safe?
Absolutely. Our experienced guides are certified in marine safety, first aid, and wilderness rescue. All guests are provided with life jackets and safety briefings.
What type of boats do you use?
We use Zodiac Hurricane vessels—safe, stable, and highly maneuverable boats designed for exploration in remote areas.
What if the weather is bad?
Haida Gwaii weather can be unpredictable. We prioritize safety and may adjust routes or reschedule tours in the event of adverse conditions.
Do you accommodate dietary restrictions?
Yes, we can accommodate most dietary needs on multi-day trips. Please notify us when booking.
Is falling out of the boat a risk?
We have never had a client fall out of a boat while it’s moving, although some people have fallen into shallow water while getting on or off at a beach! We practice drills each spring with all our guides to prepare them in the unlikely event that you are the first to ever go over the side.
Our guides are equipped with personal locator beacons (PLBS) and must always wear the engine kill switch.
What paperwork will I need to fill out prior to the tour?
You will need to fill out a medical form before you arrive and read and sign a waiver. This is all done online through your booking invoice. We can also complete the medical form over the phone and provide you with a paper waiver. Please get in touch with us to arrange this. If you are not comfortable accepting the wording on our waiver, we are unable to provide you with the service.
Do you offer luggage storage?
We have multiple locations where we can store your luggage while you’re on tour with us, depending on where you’d like to be after your trip ends. Please get in touch with us to arrange this in advance.
Can I join the tour if I’m planning to stay on Graham Island before and/or after the tour?
Absolutely! We time our tour around the ferries to and from Graham Island. If you come over from Graham Island on the morning of the tour, you will need to catch the first ferry over from HlG̱aagilda Skidegate (departing at 7:30). We will get you back in time for either the 5:30 pm ferry or the 7:00 pm ferry. Note that we cannot head into Sandspit and then return to the ferry, so make sure you have any luggage with you.
Do I need to attend the Gwaii Haanas orientation before the tour?
No, you do not need to attend the orientation prior to the tour. While you are certainly welcome to attend the orientation at the Heritage Centre if you wish, we will provide the relevant orientation material throughout the trip.
Environmental and Cultural Responsibility
How do you minimize your environmental impact?
We use fuel-efficient boats, support local conservation efforts, source local food, and operate a solar-powered float camp to reduce our footprint.
How do you respect Haida culture?
We work closely with the Haida Nation, incorporate Haida values into our operations, and educate guests on the cultural significance of the land and waters.
Do I need to sign the Haida Gwaii Pledge?
While not mandatory, we strongly encourage signing the Haida Gwaii Pledge to show your commitment to responsible and respectful travel.
Miscellaneous Questions
Can I customize a tour?
Yes, we offer customized tours for private groups, educational institutions, and special interests. Contact us to discuss your preferences.
What is the best time to visit Haida Gwaii?
Summer (May–September) is the most popular season for its warmer weather and wildlife activity, but each season offers unique experiences.
What is your cancellation policy?
If you cancel more than 120 days before the beginning of the tour, we will refund the full amount you have provided
Between 120 days and 30 days, we will keep your 25% deposit. Any additional amount will be refunded.
The full amount is due 30 days before the tour departs.
If you cancel 30 days or less before tour departure, we will keep the full amount. No exceptions will be made unless we can fill your seats, then we will provide a full refund.
If we cancel your tour for any reason at any time, we will refund the full amount.
Moresby Explorers withholds the right to cancel any transport or tour at any time due to adverse weather before or during a tour or transport.
We highly recommend cancellation insurance, which protects you in case of late cancellation due to medical emergencies, unforeseen circumstances, etc. There are different kinds of cancellation insurance, including comprehensive for-any-reason insurance. This should be arranged in advance.
Do you offer discounts?
Yes, we offer discounts for local residents (conditions apply), school groups, and organisations supporting community or conservation initiatives. Children 12 and under receive a 25% discount on all our tours and transports.
Can I bring my camera or drone?
Cameras are welcome, but drones are not permitted in Gwaii Haanas without special permission due to environmental and cultural sensitivities.
How can I learn more about Haida Gwaii before my trip?
Check out gohaidagwaii.ca, The Haida Heritage Centre, local museums, or the Haida Gwaii Pledge website for great resources.
Kayaker questions
Clothing & Gear Questions
Do I need marine charts/tide tables for my trip, and if so, where can I purchase them?
Yes. Marine charts and tide tables are essential for your trip. Learn to interpret them and use a compass in low visibility—don’t rely solely on GPS.
Buy marine charts before arrival to plan routes and mark key areas. The Sandspit Visitor Centre is the only licensed dealer on Haida Gwaii; call ahead to check stock. Tide tables are available online and at the Visitor Centre, with Prince Rupert tables being the most accurate for Gwaii Haanas.
Find charts and routes on our Trip Planning Information page. The Gwaii Haanas Parks Canada website recommends purchasing charts from the Canadian Hydrographic Service:

Phone: 1-250-363-6358
Fax: 1-250-363-6841
Email: [email protected]
Do I need a marine VHF radio?
Absolutely. We will not transport you into Gwaii Haanas if you do not have a VHF radio. It is the main method of communication in the area and your only reference for weather updates. We rent VHF radios if you do not have your own.
Where can I purchase fuel and/or stoves?
Our outdoor gear store in Sandspit carries a variety of MSR stoves, as well as MSR ISOpro fuel canisters and Superfuel (a white gas equivalent). Please contact us for pricing and availability. Supervalu grocery store and Bridgeview Marine also carry fuel, such as plain white gas and small propane bottles. We recommend calling ahead of time to confirm availability.
What should I wear while paddling? What should I bring?
Plan to dress for wet, mild, coastal weather. The Gwaii Haanas website has a good starting point for packing.
What should I wear on the zodiac transport?
We travel on fast, stable Hurricane Zodiac boats, well-suited for Haida Gwaii’s variable weather. Dress in warm layers, preferably synthetic or wool, avoiding cotton as it gets cold when wet. Bring a warm hat, sunglasses, and gloves. We provide a raincoat for layering, but it’s essential to have your raingear. Be prepared for stepping into water when boarding, so wear waterproof footwear or footwear that can get wet.
Food Questions
Where can I purchase a saltwater fishing license?
Purchase your fishing license online before arriving in Haida Gwaii, as there are no local sales in Sandspit. Fishing gear is available at Bridgeview Marine, a 30-minute walk from our office and B&B. Note that Gwaii Haanas is closed to shellfish harvesting due to poisoning, and several areas are also closed for conservation. A map of these closures will be provided during your Gwaii Haanas park orientation.
Where can I get groceries?
In Sandspit, there is one grocery store (also the liquor store)—SuperValu (250 637 2249). In the summer, it is open Monday to Saturday until 6 pm, and until 4 pm on Sundays. They are closed on holidays. They only receive stock once a week, meaning selection can be limited, and you should plan to be flexible.
Weather & Environment Questions
What is the weather like in Gwaii Haanas?
Gwaii Haanas is part of a temperate rainforest. This means you should be prepared for wet and variable weather, even in the summer. Days may range from sunny and warm to windy and rainy. Temperatures typically hover between 10–20°C (50–68°F), but with rain and wind, it can feel much cooler.
What’s the best time of year to visit Gwaii Haanas?
The best time depends on your interests. For calmer seas and warmer weather, late June to August is ideal. May and early June are quieter and offer incredible wildlife viewing, including seabirds and black bears. September brings fewer visitors and the chance to witness salmon runs, but the weather is more variable.
Are there any dangerous animals in Gwaii Haanas?
Haida Gwaii has no grizzly or polar bears, snakes, or other large predators. The primary land mammal you may encounter is the black bear, which is generally shy but can be curious. Store food securely, keep your campsite clean, and respect wildlife. In the water, be aware of sea lions, which can be territorial during certain times of the year.
Are there bugs in Gwaii Haanas?
Insects such as mosquitoes, black flies, and no-see-ums are minimal compared to many other parts of Canada. However, some areas, particularly around freshwater sources, may have bugs, so bring repellent and consider a bug net for camping.

What is a Gwaii Haanas orientation, and is it mandatory?
Yes, the Gwaii Haanas orientation is mandatory for all visitors. It covers safety guidelines, cultural protocols, wildlife viewing tips, and Leave No Trace principles. Orientations are provided by Gwaii Haanas staff in HlG̱aagilda Skidegate at the Haida Heritage Centre. Moresby Explorers also offers orientations in Sandspit on request.
Where does the zodiac transport leave from?
Zodiac transport departs from Moresby Camp, located about 40 minutes south of Sandspit. We provide overland transportation to Moresby Camp. Please ensure you tell us where you are for pickup.
How much gear can I bring on the zodiac?
Space on the zodiac is limited, so please pack efficiently. We recommend waterproof, soft-sided bags. Each person is generally limited to one large dry bag, one medium dry bag, and a small day bag. Contact us if you have specific questions about gear limits.
Safety Questions
Do I need any certifications or training to kayak in Gwaii Haanas?
While certifications like Paddle Canada or BCU are not mandatory, experience in kayaking, navigation, and self-rescue is essential. Gwaii Haanas is a remote wilderness area with strong currents, changing tides, and unpredictable weather. Ensure you are prepared to handle these challenges.
Is there cell service in Gwaii Haanas?
No, there is no cell service in Gwaii Haanas. Communication is via marine VHF radio. Satellite phones or Garmin inReach devices are also good options for additional safety.
What should I do in case of an emergency?
Use your VHF radio to contact the Coast Guard (channel 16) or Gwaii Haanas staff if you are near a Watchmen site. Make sure your group has an emergency plan and enough supplies to handle delays or unforeseen circumstances.
